Yep, got home a few hours ago, and as is the norm, our first day had rain and our last day.

17100 kms, 57 days and a shit load of fun and memories. I would do it again no problem.

Thanks Pete for posting the pics for me, so many of our camps had no mobile service or at best one bar reception and when the time was available stuffing around on an iPhone was just hard work.

Rocket and Tich are well, all the bikes made it home unscathed, mine had a rear wheel issue that was discovered in Darwin when a new tyre was being fitted. I can't blame Triumph, but I have a fair idea how it happened, and I will leave it there. Cost me about $500 plus two extra days accommodation, no big deal in the scheme of things. No flat tyres, no battery issues, mine did stop on me once, died, backfired a couple of times, keyed off then on and it fired up with no other issues.

My fork seals started leaking early in the trip but made it home, rear shocks may need rebuilding, not surprising when you consider the load and the condition of some of Qld's roads, the worst in the country, WA has the best ones, easily!

Glad to hear that you're all back safely. That's one hell of an adventure you've had ... and no plane tickets involved!

Hey Lee,

That Thunderbird of yours looks a little bit too clean!!!

Where's the trailer that you carried it in?

I'll bet it's bloody filthy!

Thanks fellas

Photos always seem to do that Alex, believe me the bird is in a poor state, even though I was able to clean it a few times on the trip. Also while staying at a mates place in WA I came across a product (which was at least twenty years old) under his sink that absolutely rips the tar and shit off the headers. If I can find it available I will let you all know.

Have to say it was a bit of a surprise to see you and your son sitting at the bar in Quinalow, appreciate the effort mate

Hey Lee it was great to follow you blokes during your epic ride around the block with the boys. I'M SO JEALOUS! I'm keen to do something similar with a couple of my mates although a shorter distance and time frame due to work and family commitments. Could you please elaborate on the gear that you took - what you didn't take and should of and what gear you did take and shouldn't have. I'm thinking you naturally want to pack as light as possible but still need the basics. I guess there would be certain things that only one between the 3 would be taken to keep the gear down?? Dan

G'day Dan, thanks for the interest in our little run. Ok, I will attempt to describe the gear.

I prefer a small tent , good size self inflating mattress ( at least 65-75 mm inflated with velour on one side to stop you slipping off), sleeping bag, self inflating pillow to a swag ( I have a really good swag but!) as there are times, like when you get surrounded by grey nomads, that it's good to have some privacy and somewhere to have a wet ones bath etc, plus it's somewhere to throw all your gear if you are staying somewhere for more than a day. My tent was only $50, pops up in twenty seconds, has external frame so you don't needs pegs, your gear stops it from blowing away, packs up in a minute or two, great when you do it forty odd times!! Also a cheap tarp one and a half times the size of your tent floor, gives you a clean area out the front and protects the tent bottom.

Tools are a personal thing, I took all the tools for the ride including compressor, multimeter, tyre repair gear, small socket set allen keys etc, even the rear wheel alignment tool, socket for axle nut etc. I had one pannier dedicated to this, oh a chamois is handy too.

Some type of charging sockets hard wired to the bike for phones , scala etc. I charged these most nights without any starting issues in the mornings.

A good GPS, Garmin Zumo was almost infallible (it tried the dirt road thing again near Sapphire, but this time I ignored it Jessica and Rabbit!!) , good for not only nav but finding shopping centres, fuel stations, true speed over ground and elevation.

Cooking gear, Aldi pot set with tea pot and frying pan , small ebay fold out gas stove that takes the butane cylinders (buy them at every roadhouse, general store ( we found the other type were camping stores only) enamel cup and plate, flat folding bucket , small egg flip, at least three litres of water in robust containers, small sharp knife and fighting gear. Some spices for adding flavour.

Aldi small camp chair, a bit heavy but really comfy (full size bucket when assembled), cheap and robust. Rocket paid three times the price for his light weight chair and it lasted two nights.

One pannier dedicated to food for three nights plus snacks, we bought breakfasts (bacon and egg roll experts!!) and lunches.

LED Headlamp for night use, invaluable, small back up torch, fire lighters if you are into night fires, saves stuffing around with twigs and papers, Tich is now a convert .

Rocket carried the first aid kit. I carried the duty folding shit shovel, (bog roll and wet ones are of course a must). Tich carried an extra tarp with poles that we only used once to give us shelter over a camp table and seats on our first wet night.

I used ROK straps, swear by them, only needed two to secure my waterproof gear bag, tent and mattress, the other two had enough ocky straps to start a store!!

Things I didn't need:- solar shower (sent it home), heavy inner liner for my waxed cotton jacket (sent it home), folding toaster, small umbrella (used once) bbq tongs .

Things that were annoying:- pair of gym shoes, used them but they take up too much room, warm clothing, again take up room.

Take some clothes pegs, small under arm spray stored handy somewhere for touch ups on hot days, insect repellent, cig lighter, breath mints for your mates!!, tyre gauge, leave room in a pannier for a bottle of port

I found the hardstreet slimbags to be perfect, not too big otherwise you pack too much crap, the lid folds outwoods so you can get to things easy and the lid doubles as somewhere to put stuff when you are rummaging through your food supplies, they stood up to the trip very well and so did the easy brackets.

There is a lot more but my head is hurting, please ask questions.

Tich had a light weight bike cover, I used a light nylon tent fly to cover mine on nights with dew.

Thanks mate. It all sounds good other then the bottle of Port - I,ve had a bad experience I just have to work out how to break it to the bride that she isn't coming as there will be no room for her once the bike is packed Are you blokes doing the ride to Texas? If so I can ask further questions there over a beer

G'day Lee,

I seem to be having a little difficulty with your needs as listed below!

" ... , small under arm spray stored handy somewhere for touch ups on hot days, ... , ... , breath mints for your mates!!, ... , leave room ... for a bottle of port. "

Must have been an interesting trip mate!

As of now , no I am not attending Dan, have to replace fork seals and some other jobs plus catch up on two months of work on the property.

I doubt Tich and Rocket will be going, for their own reasons.
